Postpartum Support International (PSI): Perinatal Mental Health Certification Program (PMH-C)

For New York State Medical and Mental Health Professionals

The Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) is a professional credential offered by Postpartum Support International (PSI). Clinicians with PMH-C designation have acquired specialized perinatal mental health education and passed a national certification exam. It signifies they possess the competency to best support individuals, their partners and families experiencing perinatal mental health disorders. This Project TEACH scholarship aims to encourage NYS clinicians to pursue certification and reduce financial barriers to certification in perinatal mental health.

This credential is obtained by completing coursework which is approved for CEs, CNEs, and CMEs, and passing a standardized examination. To earn the PMH-C, candidates must:

  1. Meet eligibility requirements
    • Hold an active professional license or credential (based on PSI track requirements).
    • Have relevant clinical experience in perinatal mental health.
  2. Complete required training
    • One 14-hour foundational certificate course in perinatal mental health.
    • Six hours of track-specific advanced training.
      • Note: The Project TEACH Maternal Mental Health “Foundations” training is recognized by PSI as advanced training.
  3. Apply and sit for the PMH-C exam
    • Submit an application to PSI.
    • Pass the PMH-C certification exam:
The PMH-C certification exam is offered virtually or in-person through Pearson VUE testing centers, which are located throughout the U.S.

If awarded, the Project TEACH scholarship will reimburse up to $2,000 to offset costs associated with the following steps in obtaining their PMH-C:

  • One 14-hour certificate course (required to sit for exam)
  • Track-specific advanced training (required to sit for exam)
  • The PMH-C exam (reimbursement will be provided for a maximum of two attempts)

Note: Any additional costs (e.g., travel, CME, certification maintenance) are the responsibility of the awardee.

Applicants must:

  • Be eligible to register for the PMH-C certification exam or have passed the PMH-C exam within 6 months of the scholarship application
  • Be a New York State-based professional
  • Have at least 2 years of experience working with the perinatal population
