ROSE is a brief (5-session) program for pregnant individuals based on interpersonal psychotherapy concepts. It is considered an evidence-based preventive intervention for perinatal depression, meaning that multiple rigorous research studies have shown that perinatal people who complete ROSE are significantly less likely to develop depression symptoms compared to people who do not. During the program, providers teach patients about the symptoms of postpartum depression, managing the transition to motherhood, managing relationships, self-care, assertiveness, and goal-setting.
This training is intended for providers who work with perinatal individuals in New York State. It will be most useful for providers who routinely work with perinatal people who have not yet developed perinatal depression but are at risk. ROSE can be delivered by mental health professionals and people without mental health expertise including nurses, health educators, doulas, community health workers, and other providers.
ROSE is flexible. It can be delivered in person or via telehealth and in a group or one-on-one. ROSE is most likely to be effective in reducing perinatal depression if providers present the material from all 5 sessions consistently.
ROSE was developed and studied as a program to prevent depression among pregnant individuals without a depression diagnosis. It will likely be helpful for people who may be at higher risk for perinatal depression due to factors like a history of previous depression, racial or ethnic minority status, or current social stressors. ROSE is not a treatment for individuals who are already experiencing current perinatal depression or other psychiatric symptoms.
Individuals who complete this training will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing group consultation with Project TEACH team members about ROSE. They may also use our warmline to ask questions related to delivering ROSE.
